Frequently asked questions

What's on your mind?

Answers to the questions we hear most. If yours isn't here, contact us and we'll help.

Getting started

What conditions do you treat?+

We treat a wide range of mental health conditions in patients ages 6 and older, including anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, PTSD, OCD, panic disorder, social anxiety, ADHD, schizophrenia, substance use disorders, eating disorders, and maternal mental health concerns. If you are not sure where you fit, reach out and we will help.

Are you accepting new patients?+

Yes. We are currently accepting new patients for psychiatric evaluations and medication management. Our goal is to reach every new inquiry within one business day.

How do I get started?+

Submit our new-patient form or call us. We will reach out within one business day, verify your insurance, and schedule your first appointment with the provider who fits your needs.

How long until my first appointment?+

Our goal is to reach every new inquiry within one business day. Time to first appointment depends on insurance verification and provider availability, but is typically 3 to 7 days from first contact.

What ages do you see?+

We care for patients ages 6 and older, including children, teens, and adults. For patients under 18, care is arranged with a parent or legal guardian, who is involved in the intake and treatment. Contact us with the patient's age and what you're looking for, and we'll confirm we're the right fit.

Do you treat ADHD and prescribe stimulant medication?+

Yes. We evaluate and treat ADHD in teens and adults, with both stimulant and non-stimulant options where appropriate. Because stimulants are controlled medications, prescribing involves responsible monitoring and, depending on current rules, may require an in-person visit at our Frederick office.

Our care and providers

Who are your providers?+

Our care is delivered by board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (PMHNPs) with extensive outpatient experience. You see the same provider over time so your care plan builds on your history.

Do you offer therapy?+

Our providers focus on psychiatric evaluation and medication management. If you also want talk therapy, we coordinate with your existing therapist or can help connect you with a trusted therapist in the Frederick area through our psychotherapy coordination service.

What's the difference between a psychiatrist and a therapist?+

A psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse practitioner (PMHNP) is a medical provider who can evaluate, diagnose, and prescribe medication. A therapist or counselor provides talk therapy, the conversation-based work of building skills and processing experiences. Many people benefit from both. We provide the medication side and coordinate with a therapist for the talk-therapy side.

What is your approach to prescribing?+

We practice evidence-based, conservative prescribing. We use medication when it helps and not when it doesn't, start carefully, monitor your response, and adjust over time. Some medications, including certain controlled substances, may require an in-person visit or additional monitoring.

Can I switch providers?+

Yes. If you would like to see a different provider, just let us know and we will do our best to accommodate.

Appointments and telehealth

Do you offer telehealth?+

Yes. We offer both secure video visits and in-person visits at our Frederick office. Telehealth is available throughout Maryland. You should be physically located in Maryland at the time of a telehealth visit.

How long are appointments?+

New-patient evaluations are typically 60 minutes. Follow-up visits are usually 25 to 30 minutes.

What is your cancellation policy?+

We ask for at least 24 hours' notice to cancel or reschedule. Cancellations with less than 24 hours' notice, and missed appointments, are subject to a flat $50 fee. See our Insurance & Payments page for details.

What if I have an emergency?+

We are an outpatient practice and do not provide emergency or crisis care. If you are in crisis or thinking about harming yourself or others, call or text 988, call 911, or go to your nearest emergency room.

Insurance and payments

Do you accept my insurance?+

We are in-network with most major plans in Maryland, including Medicaid, Medicare, CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, Aetna, Cigna, Humana, UnitedHealthcare, and Johns Hopkins Health Plans. Contact us to verify your specific plan.

How much will it cost?+

With insurance, your cost is usually a copay or coinsurance and may depend on your deductible. We verify your benefits before your first visit and tell you your expected cost up front. Self-pay rates are $300 for an initial evaluation and $150 for a follow-up.

Do you bill my insurance?+

Yes, as a courtesy we submit claims to your insurance carrier for you. You are responsible for any remaining balance such as a copay, coinsurance, or deductible amount.

Can I use my HSA or FSA?+

Yes. You can use a Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA) card for copays, visits, and prescriptions.

Privacy and security

Is my information private?+

Yes. We are HIPAA-compliant by design, with encrypted records, role-based access, and signed agreements with every vendor that handles your information. See our Privacy Policy for details.

Do you sell my information?+

No. We never sell your personal information, and we do not use intake-form information for advertising.
